The Famous 99-Second Talks
Jenna Charlton
Talk_TestBashMobile_99SecondTalks
- So Richard, am I kicking it off? Looks like I am. - [Richard] Yeah. Go for it. I'll time you. - You'll time me. So, I think you all know. I'm Jenna Charlton @TheyWrestleTest I mentioned that I have some really exciting things happening. Graduating, got accepted to Grad school. Really good stuff is happening, just in general. And for those of you who don't know, I am not in contact with my mom. That's lots and lots of trauma and bad stuff and so we don't talk. But I had a huge breakthrough yesterday. Got a card in the mail. Didn't open it, just looked at the front of it. I recognise that handwriting, flipped it over, said oh! yep. I know exactly who sent that. So, I handed it to my husband. And I said you know what, you do with this what you think is right. And he looked at me, he goes, "Okay, you really ready for that?" I said "Yeah, you do with it what you think is right." He took it, balled it up, threw it in the outside trash can and poured water on it. Came back in, said "It's gone." Can't even open it now. And I have to tell you that six months ago I would've been thrown into a spiral for weeks. But yesterday, I said, "Nope, I'm taking control of this." I'm in charge, handed it to him. And haven't looked at it since and think I'm getting cut off. But I just wanted you all to know to celebrate your big and small wins. And that was a small win for me that I'm very proud of. (Jenna chuckles) (audience clapping) Thank you for indulging me (laughs). All right! Awesome, we've got people signed up. So tell everybody your name. - Can you hear me- - Is it I am on the spotlight? - [Richard] Hello, say, yes. - There you are. - Okay. - Oh! Okay. So, for me actually like, frankly speaking, there were lot of good knowledge sharing which was done by every participant and even from the host and what I really feel like there was certain perception which were already imbibed in me, that okay, the way which I am doing is correct, right? But now there have been certain tweak in those, you can say perceptions and the way of thinking. And it's really good because there wasn't any external force which was asking me to do something in a certain way. So that's why I feel like today's session was really very exciting and apart from that it was full of knowledge, and I got to meet with few of the renowned, you can say, authors and writers, and apart from that some eminent speakers. So for me, it was really good experience and yeah. - Thank you so much. Before we let you go, tell everybody your name so that everybody knows who you are and they can follow you. (Jenna laughs) - (laughs) Yeah, so I am Saif Siddiqui and basically I'm working in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with a software company and I'm working as an automation tester currently, yeah. - Thank you so much Saif. We were so excited to have you. This was great. Everybody give a round of applause. (audience clapping) There we got it. All right, let's bring on Al. - [Richard] I got a minute, I forgot to invite. - Oh! (Richard typing) All right, we only give Richard just a second to get Al on. Like I said 99-Second Talks are super super cool. It's just your set, your time to talk. Your time to say something interesting that you care about. - [Richard] You keep trying to join. Have you got someone else to add? - Mm- - [Richard] He is joining by mistake I think. - Yeah. - [Richard] Okay, kick you back off again. - Also, by the way folks, 99-Second Talks. This is not a super structured thing. We don't stress about when things go a little off the rails, it is okay. And by the way, you should know that I am very casual about stuff. So, let's roll with it when these things happen. I hope you do too. I think it's part of what testers are good at, by the way. It's just rolling with, you know, "Oh! This didn't go right. "Okay, let's figure out how to get it going." Looks like- - [Richard] (indistinct) - What's that? - [Richard] Al is here. So I'm just gonna add up, here we go. - Hello? - Hi Al. Passing it over to you. - [Richard] Can you say anything now, is it working? - Oh! Yeah, can you hear me? - [Richard] Yep. - Now we can, yeah. - Awesome. Okay, cool. Oh! Thanks. - [Richard] Are you ready? - Hi! Yeah. Awesome. So, I came into this. Hi, yeah. Awesome. Yeah. - You're right? We can hear you and see you, okay. Do you wanna jump in or Can you hear me? - I can hear you. Yes I- - Okay, all right. So- - that's just a very big lag on the recording. That's all. - Yes, so Hopin is about 15 seconds behind this which is why you just don't pay any attention to Hopin. Just look at this screen or you can do what other people do and just look away from Hopin. Pretend it's not there and then you won't notice cause' the lag is often. - [Richard] Make sure you mute Hopin out. Press pause on Hopin or mute it. And then you won't hear the same sound twice. - How's that? - [Richard] There you go. - Yes. - Ah! Yeah, so much better. (Al laughs) (Richard laughs) - [Richard] All right. Then when you're ready and you can, the stage is yours. - Okay, so I came to this online conference and I hadn't got anywhere near mobile testing in a while. And our organisation is looking at mobile testing through fresh eyes as we've apps, our suite of application that we've got, has a mobile element to it that needs. Yeah, needs also care as well. And the one thing that I think that for us as people who are interested in the mobile side of development and testing, is to help all our teams with getting to a place where they can be comfortable with testing, using either it's a hybrid app or it's a native app, whatever. But actually helping by bringing in, tooling, how-to's, workshops. I know we did a workshop recently and it's something that for our subject matter experts that we have throughout the entire quality kind of discipline, through all of ministry of tests. It's something that we should encourage and look at is to get everybody, is to dispel this idea of mobile testing is a big scary animal that has people running in the opposite direction screaming. And that actually show it's actually quite a cuddly teddy bear. Thanks. - We'll give Al (audience clapping) a huge round of applause Thanks Al. And we're gonna bring on boss boss to share his 99 seconds of thoughts with us. - To work. One second. Can you still hear me? - We can. - Oh! Amazing. Okay, I want me put myself on the stage. Oh! I muted myself. I don't think I have the energy to do it again. I'm so depressed. Ooh! Right. Okay, we'll let Karen go and I'll recover of my disappointed state and then I might not do it again. It's too much for me. Oh dear! You are. People can hear you Jenna. You can comfort me. Don't worry. (Richard laughs) - I wanna comfort you, but I wasn't on stage. - You can still hear people when they're not on stage. - I'm sorry. - I can't fix this. How do I fix this? - Here we go. - I didn't- - Here we go. Don't worry. We'll let you- - It was a really cool tour of the office. (Richard laughs) - It's all right. - Give yourself a- - It could be what I was trying to say. (Jenna laughs) - Here you go. Right. Let's bring Karen on and then I will regroup. - Hi, Karen. - Hello. - I'm gonna mess it over to you and your fabulous cowboy get (Karen laughs) - Well, I've been up since 6:00 am this morning. It's now 2:30. So, anybody who's been on for at least the last eight and a half hours I applaud you if you've been on for longer. Oh my goodness! Even more applause. (laughs) (Jenna laughs) Alrighty. So when do I start? Was that me starting? - Yeah, go ahead and start. - [Karen] Okay, perfect. - [Jenna] Richard, we're looking at you. (Karen laughs) - [Richard] No, no. Everything's gone wrong since I tried to be smart with different cameras. All right, there you go. - So I've been thinking about something kind of throughout this whole series about how I'm looking for something that I'm excited in that it can equate to my excitement for testing. And I think I've landed on it. I think it's Legos. Because Legos, you have to build them brick by brick to make sense of the wider structure, Just like you do in a test by test, line by line basis. And you know, you follow tutorials for the complicated parts and then you add your own Finese and then you play with it and you see where how far you can get with it. You test the boundaries, you pull some pieces back apart put them back together in other places. Just find out what works the best for you. And I really enjoy that. I think that's probably why I like Legos so much and why I like testing so much. Thank you. - Huge round of applause for Karen. (audience clapping and cheering) Richard, you gonna give it a try again? - [Richard] Go on. I'll give it another go. Let's give it a go, all right. - I will yell this time. - [Richard] I'm sorry. No, I'm gonna test it before I leave. Right, let's see. - All right. Does it work? - It works. - Okay. Okay. Let's give it a go. Let's see if I can use this. All right. So what I was trying to say was people don't use mobile phones or mobile apps or mobile websites sat at their desk. Like we typically tend to test them sat at our desk. They tend to be out and about doing various things. For example, they could be in the pub playing pool and now I can see if I can actually have a better shot this time. No, absolutely not. And they could be sight in different rooms in their house. They could be chilling on the sofa, watching some TV with potentially bad signal or really good signal. They could be moving from different rooms to rooms, you know People tend to pick up their phones when they go out and about. So they could be out and about walking around their office potentially going into the kitchen to make themselves a cup of tea, stood by a kettle, stood by a noisy microwave, all these different things that people do when they go to use a mobile phone. And finally, they could also potentially use their mobile phone in the bathroom. I'm joking I'm joking. I'm not gonna do that to you. That would be really bad. My point is there was a fantastic tester called Dan Shakur. And one thing he said is that it's a sin to test a mobile app at your desk. So my mine 99-Second Talk is if you're testing mobile apps. Get away from your desk and test them elsewhere. And also, yeah, you get to see a tour of the office. Thank you very much. - Big round of applause for boss boss for doing that again. (audience clapping and cheering) And one more round of applause for everybody that did 99-Second Talk, all of our speakers today, all of our hosts, everybody was fantastic. One more big round of applause. I'm abusing that applause button. (audience clapping) Well, we've come to the end of our time together. I hope that everybody found something to take back to their teams. I hope everybody learns something new. I hope everybody has something new to think about and to explore because that's what this is about. Also I hope that we made some friends. I love that administrative testing creates intentional space for meeting people even in this very virtual setting. Something that people said after all of the TestBash homes is it felt like we were together. And by the way, as somebody who's done a lot of virtual conferences as a speaker and even as a host No one says that about other virtuals. It's just TestBash. So I hope you had an opportunity to take advantage of that, and meet new people and connect with people you already know and build those connections and build that community, cause' that community is so critical for us as people. And it's really critical for your career. So, as we reach the end, I hope you all have some fantastic takeaways. Thank you so much for being here with us. Thank you for taking a part of it. Thanks for putting up with all of my sparkles. You know, this is a thing I do. I think I'm retiring it after this one because this dress weighs a million pounds and I do don't think I can top it. It's really impressive in person. But thank you, thank you so much for taking part in this today and we'll see you next time.
