As AI becomes more pervasive and is more discussed in the news by politicians and the public, it is easy for those of us in IT to worry about our place in the brave new world. What will we do? What can we do? Are our jobs just going to disappear?
Isabel has worked in IT for 4 decades and seen more than one new technology arrive, be heralded as the end of development activities - especially testing and then become mainstream and understood as testable and in need of testing. IT work continues to need intelligent, experienced workers who understand critical thinking, engineering, the business, and, most importantly, the customer.
Those AI tools - Are they intelligent? Are they experienced? And what about us? What do we contribute?
We cannot be complacent – but we don’t need to panic…

About Isabel:
Isabel is a Fellow of the British Computer Society. She received the 2017 Testing Excellence Award at the EuroSTAR conference, Copenhagen, November 2017. She is honoured to have been the Programme Chair for the EuroSTAR Conference 2019, in Prague. With forty years in IT, and lately in research, Dr Evans graduated with a PhD from the University of Malta in 2026. Her research is about the experiences of software testers, examining stereotyping and challenges with test tools. She developed the idea-t framework of heuristics for test tool design.
