Talk 2 : Automated accessibility testing - Easy wins to design and deliver accessibility-compliant products

By Vas Ntokas

Accessibility testing is a team sport, and every role in a multidisciplinary team has an important role to play.

Usually, people are confused about their personal or their team’s responsibilities and often think it’s just down to the Product design colleagues.

As testers we are responsible for securing and assuring the final product is actually accessible and meets the latest accessibility standards.
To achieve that we have firstly to perform usability and accessibility testing in user research and automated/manual checks against the latest criteria in the final product. There are many standards for accessibility, which can be confusing.

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 covers a wide range of recommendations for making Web content more accessible and are the latest standards product teams need to follow in case of delivering accessible products. In this talk, I will share easy ways for quick wins on assuring the accessibility of your product by using automated testing. All demonstrated tools will be user-friendly, easy to understand and most importantly will provide feedback by identifying quickly common fails.
We will slightly touch the additional testing needed (Manual and Assistive Technologies) in case of achieving accessibility compliance against the latest WCAG 2.2 standards.

About: I am working as Lead Test Engineer at the Department for Work and Pensions where I lead a multidisciplinary team across the Digital Modernisation and Children's/Families area. Previously I had the opportunity to work as a consultant in different domains for many clients across the UK. My extensive experience as an Accessibility Champion in my area, helped me develop my skills and knowledge in accessibility testing, usability and modern accessibility regulation and laws. I work closely with many product teams across the department and collaborate with designers, product owners, developers, testers, and architects in case of delivering accessible products to our users.
