Definition: An open question is a question that invites the other person to give more information, rather than choose from a small set of answers. It usually starts with words like what, how or why. In testing, open questions are a way to draw out detail about a product, a problem or a decision.
So what? Testers rely on information from other people. An open question makes it more likely someone will share what they know, including things the tester didn't think to ask about.
Examples: Asking "What questions do you have?" instead of "Do you have any questions?" at the end of a presentation. Opening an interview with "Could you tell me about an interesting bug that you found recently?"
