Quality leadership

Quality leadership is the work of shaping how quality is prioritised across a team or organisation, not just how testing gets done. It covers advocating for quality where decisions are made, influencing choices about environments, tools and processes, and driving the organisational change needed to improve them. It can come with a formal title, such as director of quality engineering, but it starts with taking ownership and influencing others.

So what? Decisions that affect quality are often made without input from testers. Quality leaders close that gap by building business cases, coordinating across teams and unblocking people, work that individual contributors rarely have the time or organisational context to take on alone. Dedicated quality leadership roles have become scarcer as many organisations move testers into squads, which makes the path into them less clear.

Examples: A director of quality engineering meeting product managers, engineers and designers to introduce an integration environment, after an overloaded pre-production environment kept causing false automation failures. A tester without a leadership title proposing improvements to the team’s quality strategy and mentoring teammates to raise engineering standards.
