Do you do any accessibility testing? If so, what do you do, and are there any tools you would recommend?
In my experience, I haven’t done extensive or dedicated accessibility testing programs yet, but I’ve incorporated some basic accessibility checks within automation.
- On Android, I’ve used Espresso to validate that elements expose proper accessibility attributes like content-desc.
- On iOS, I’ve done something similar using XCUITest, ensuring elements have meaningful accessibility identifiers/labels.
This helps ensure elements are not only testable but also usable by assistive technologies like TalkBack and VoiceOver. It’s a good starting point, though it doesn’t fully cover accessibility compliance.
I’ve also used Applitools, but that’s more for visual testing. It can sometimes help catch contrast or visual issues, but it’s not a dedicated accessibility solution and in my experience, it is costly to maintain the tests. Beyond this, I’ve come across axe for mobile (Deque), which seems like a more comprehensive solution for automated accessibility testing and is definitely something worth exploring further.
key takeaway:
- Accessibility Automation can help catch basic issues, but it’s not enough on its own
- Accessibility still needs human validation, especially using screen readers, to truly understand usability and navigation
Would love to hear how others are integrating accessibility into their pipelines
