Talk Description

Onboarding is a painful process in just about any industry. New employees are subjected to explanations of benefits, piles of paperwork, org chart explanations, and the list goes on. Then the new tester walks to their new desk and signs into their new computer. Now what? Far too often, it's hours upon hours of reading manuals (when they exist), digging through developer tasks, or having to ask question after question to get up to speed. All of these issues are only exacerbated when the new hire is also new to software testing.

In an industry where the answer to most questions is a well-justified, “it depends,” how do we bring the next generation of QA professionals up to speed effectively and efficiently? We will explore the potential of training materials, pair testing, strengthening the team culture, and above all, how to help our testing disciples know the product almost as well as we do. The smarter our investments in a new employee are, the better the returns we can look forward to.

This Masterclass was kindly sponsored by Applitools. Applitools is on a mission to help test automation, DevOps, and software engineering teams release apps that are visually perfect -- by providing the only commercial-grade solution that validates the user interface of any app in a fully automated manner. Find out more about Applitools.

By the end of this session, you'll be able to:

  • Describe what onboarding is
  • Avoid common onboarding pain points
  • Use a four stage onboarding strategy to efficiently onboard new hires
Lead QA
Quality assurance was the best unintended career I could have ever asked for! Development was always my plan and the focus of my schooling -- however, opportunities came in quality assurance that were too good to pass up, and I am not sorry I took them. Working for a high-quality deliverable can be challenging, and watching a smooth delivery and adoption is very gratifying.
