Learning about our next steps as an experienced quality person

30 Sep 2026

In this moment: Jesper Ottosen
Leading with Quality helped me reflect on my current role within my organisation, especially whilst listening to the excellent talk from Jesper Ottosan (https://www.ministryoftesting.com/p/jesper)  where he discussed "What is next for the experienced quality person?".

Many years ago I was a Test Manager in my organisation, but I moved out of it into a Lead Tester role within an agile team as I didn't enjoy the management side of things.  For the rest of my career there I have demonstrated leadership in a non-management role - where I help direct the team, share my product knowledge.  His talk very much resonated with me on the concept and idea being a staff level tester, with responsibility and influence but not having to play that direct role of a manager.  It was also a pleasure to discuss over the lunch break with Jesper some of these points and the challenges in my current role, especially with recent company changes.

He also spoke about his book called Staff Level Testing Roles which I very much look forward to reading.
