AI Testing

What is AI testing?

AI testing has two distinct meanings in software QA:
  • Testing AI systems themselves to ensure they work correctly and ethically.
  • Using AI-powered tools to enhance your software testing process.

As AI becomes more prevalent, testers need to understand both aspects.

Do you have any examples of AI testing?

Consider a facial recognition system that needs testing across different lighting conditions, ethnicities, and angles—that's testing OF AI.

On the flip side, imagine an AI tool that watches you perform a test case once, then automatically generates hundreds of similar test cases—that's testing WITH AI. Tools like Testim and Mabl use AI to maintain tests even when your UI changes.

Why is AI testing important?

Unlike traditional software, AI systems evolve as they learn from new data. This makes testing crucial but complex. You need to verify not just functionality, but also fairness, bias, and ethical behavior. Meanwhile, AI-powered testing tools are revolutionizing how we approach quality assurance by automating repetitive tasks and finding bugs humans might miss.

What are the challenges with AI testing?

Testing AI systems is tricky because they don't always give the same output for the same input—that's just the nature of machine learning. You might also struggle with "black box" algorithms where you can't easily understand why decisions are made.

When using AI for testing, the challenge shifts to trusting the AI's judgment and maintaining tests that adapt to changing applications.
