Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) is a full-screen error display shown by Windows when the operating system hits a failure it canβt recover from. It first appeared in Windows NT 3.1 in 1993 and was designed to inform the user with an error message rather than to act as a crash screen.
So what? BSoD has become shorthand for system failure, and other platforms have their own versions in other colours.
Examples: The July 2024 CrowdStrike update that left Windows machines worldwide stuck on blue screens; the purple screen VMware shows when its kernel catches a machine check exception; the BSoD that appeared during a live TV demo of Windows 98.
