Bootloader is the small program that runs when a machine starts up and loads the operating system. On an encrypted disk it also asks for the passphrase needed to unlock the drive.
So what? Bootloader errors can be misleading: a simple typo can look like a hardware failure.
Example: The GRUB bootloader doesn’t show characters as a passphrase is typed. So a mistyped password produces “access denied” and drops into rescue mode, which looks like a dead hard drive.
