A machine check exception is an error raised by the processor when it detects a hardware fault it can’t safely ignore. Typical sources are memory, cache, the system bus or the CPU itself. Correctable errors may simply be logged, but uncorrectable ones usually force the operating system or hypervisor to stop rather than risk corrupting data. How that stop looks depends on the platform: VMware ESXi shows a purple diagnostic screen, Windows usually shows a blue screen, and Linux may log the error or halt with a kernel panic.
So what? Not every “screen of death” comes from a software bug. Some point to hardware that is failing underneath the software.
Example: VMware’s purple diagnostic screen appears when its VMkernel catches a machine check exception and reports that the system cannot continue.
