Smishing

Smishing image
It's phishing via mobile phone messages. It's short for SMS phishing, and very attractive to cyber criminals because it has a high read & response rate. The average for the UK June 24-June 25 so far is:

SMS: Read 98% > 45% replied

Vs

Email: Read 20% > Replied 6%

It's an easy attack for criminals but hard to defend against.

Most companies focus on Phishing education via email and forget SMS.

Common Smishing Tactics
  • Spoofed sender names (e.g., pretending to be a bank or delivery service)
  • Urgent language (“Your account is locked!”)
  • Shortened URLs to hide malicious links
  • Requests for personal or financial info
