The art of the 99 seconds air horn

Since 2013 (I think) we've been doing 99 second talks. It's hard to remember the exact details, but I think we used an air horn in the early days, but it's also varied along the way. And there's a few things I've learned along the way on how to make it a better experience.

I brought along an air horn to MoT London and Stu Day was having so much fun with it. I'm so glad that it got picked up by our MoTographer. Yes, the 99 seconds are important, but also is the vibe of fear and anticipation of the air horn is crucial too. It matters more than you might think.

So here are my biggest tips on doing 99-second talks with the air horn assist, that I realise that I don't always communicate upfront:
  1. Have an air horn
  2. Have a go using the air horn pre-event
  3. Don't let speakers see the timer count down
  4. Pre-warn the audience of the incoming sound
  5. Encourage speakers to keep going so that you can use the air horn
  6. Boundaries and rules are good, use the air horn always, upon 99 seconds
  7. Find flow, 99 seconds is about flow, pay attention to the energy in the room and go with it
  8. Don't have an airhorn? Get creative, with a mobile app, for example. But an airhorn is is always best.

At the end of the day, have fun, be encouraging and elevate the brave person who has come on stage.

But also, recognise that there is an art to the process. Flow matters. Energy does too. Sometimes it can feel like no one wants to get up on stage, but once someone gets up, then the floodgates open.
