Don't like my messy desk? Don't look at it 🫣

Spent some time listening to the Call for Insights with Simon Tomes and Heleen Van Grootven. She talked about "Finding joy in your role" and how embracing her ADHD made her job more enjoyable. I gasped, though, when she started talking about how having a clean desk doesn't help her. If something is out of sight, it's out of mind, so it's beneficial to have some things on her desk so that she remembers she has them. This helped me understand my Post-it addiction usage. If I want to stay organized, I assign myself tasks, and I post them on my desk, on my laptop, and on my monitor screen. I work through them daily and throw away the ones that are no longer valid. At times, I've felt like this organization method is a wasteful one, but I think what would be more unfortunate is not feeling organized about my work. So, when she said, "If you don't like to look at my desk, you don't have to look at it," (my paraphrase), I laughed out loud. This is so true. I'm not bothering anyone. I'm working. If it bothers you, feel free to look elsewhere.

It's nice to think that we don't have to operate in the same ways. We can show up as ourselves and do our best work, even when we're covered in post-its.

Loved this Call for Insights. Thanks, Heleen and Simon!

I'm glad me and my sticky notes were of help to you! It used to bother me, but I've learned that having a clean desk and a functional work environment are mutually exclusive for me, so I've gone all in on the functional work environment (and life environment--I keep all my meds in plain sight because I will straight up forget to take them otherwise).
