Scareware

Scareware image
Scareware is deceptive software or messaging that uses fear to pressure people into installing malware, paying for fake fixes, or revealing secrets. In cybersecurity, it imitates warnings or security alerts to manipulate user behaviour, often creating a path to credential theft, fraud, or unauthorised access.

Scareware can even appear on smartphones through malicious websites, apps or misleading advertisements. A fake warning may claim your phone has a virus and push you to download an app or provide personal information.
