The fear factor in Software Testing: Recognize it, address it, transform it

In many teams, fear can easily creep into the testing process. Instead of using thoughtful, risk‑based decisions to guide what we test, how deeply we test, and when we stop, fear begins to dictate the effort. Fear of defects escaping. Fear of disappointing stakeholders or clients. Fear of the unknown. It can creep in quietly or as a knee-jerk reaction to a major incident.

This shift from risk‑based to fear‑based testing can feel subtle at first, but its consequences are substantial: bloated test suites, reactive decision-making, lost trust and exhausted testers.

In this talk, I explore how and why teams move into fear‑based testing, what happens when fear takes the driver’s seat, and how to recognize the warning signs early. From my own experience in a team where fear temporarily overruled logic, I will share what happened when our carefully crafted risk assessments suddenly flew out the window.

Most importantly, I will offer practical strategies to help teams to overcome this fear-based testing and return to risk-based testing. You will learn how to recognize and acknowledge fear rather than dismiss it, so that you can uncover the underlying causes and rebuild the trust. This talk provides concrete approaches for testers, developers, product owners, and managers to restore clarity, confidence, and focus, so testing once again becomes a deliberate, value- and risk‑driven activity rather than a reaction to anxiety.

Rewatching this! This is a great story - with just the right dose of pshycology. "fear adds activity faster than it creates value" is spot on and generally applicable.
