AMA about transition from Manual to Automation Tester
29 Mar 2026
Inspired by the following challenge: Create a Moment: Ask MoTaverse Anything.
We have often seen that many of us who test the software to ensure quality of the product are trapped in the manual testing. Few of us want to learn and step into automation but they are unsure how to step out of manual testing and from where to start.
Sometimes, we feel like time is the constraint or we never got chance to work in our organisation and so we are not able to learn automation. Sometimes, we know automation but we are in hurry to finish the task and end up finishing task manually. Few of us tried to book the workshop but failed to attend it because we were so occupied in our regular works.
I have been through all these. I also started my journey as a Manual tester and gradually stepped into Automation world. Initial days were hard but slowly I learnt about the pattern, what works in which environment and how to go on smoothly.Â
I can share some tips and ideas how to step into the automation - where to start, what tools to choose and how to move ahead. Small practices makes big differences. So if you feel like you want to learn automation but unsure how to come out of your day to day QA activities, please feel free to ask any questions and I will try to help you with solutions.Â

What's one small thing someone can do today to learn about automation?
Gary Hawkes
From knowing manual testing to learning automation, what have you learned that can be sone to bridge the gap between manual testing and automated testing being separate jobs done by separate people? If they are jobs done by separate people, what can those people do to help each other build a seamless process?
Rosie Sherry
What support did you find most helpful during the transition?
Heleen Van Grootven
My biggest issue is, unfortunately, time. Do you have any advice on finding the time to learn when all the work still needs doing and there isn't really room in your working day to focus on automation?
Lan Anh
Do you have books/training you can recommend to inprove your skill/set up?
