As Seth Godin once said, "Systems don’t start out selfish, but resilient ones often end up that way."
So I guess we can't blame a system for trying to protect itself. Yet I like how you've framed the importance of zooming out. This gives us the chance to recognise where and how a system has become selfish and choosing what we can do with that information.
