IDE tooling for LLM work will emerge

I'm taking a moment to consider, that if LLM's re the new level of coding (7th generation tooling?), then it will only be a matter of time before we see integrated development environments with/for LLM work. It doesn't really matter if it's code or research work -it's beyond "Chat as code".

  • Chat's are under version control, in git or similar (resources for chat's too, btw)
  • Patterns for chats will emerge, like Given-When-Then and Arrange-Act-Assert
  • Generators will emerge, that take business acceptance criteria and generate prompts
  • Pipelines to run prompts on schedule

All the features of a good IDE will come, and I have surely missed some. It's a repeated generational pattern.
Which ones are you missing and advocating for?

Great Insights and it's really thoughtful. Looking at the past patterns, no surprises if IDE for LLM emerges!! I agree to you.

I think VS Code is already working out on a lot of AI capabilities at the moment. What you feel is going to get true for sure.
