The MoTaverse helps you with squish that imposter syndrome away

26 Oct 2026

A video of Rosai Sherry and Saimon Tomes. It is AI generated and cheesy. It shows Rosie and Simon grabbing the words 'Imposter Syndrome' and squishing it into a ball. Video transcript: Rosai: "We need to get rid of this." Saimon: "Alright, let's grab it." Rosai: "Pull it down." Saimon: "Squish it down nto a ball." Rosai: "Ready and make it disappear." Saimon: "Wow, it is completely gone."

We're pitching the MoTaverse as Community as a Service (Caas).

The things we do and offer as part of this community are immensely valuable, yet often go unnoticed. So, we're on a journey to highlight how Community as a Service shows up.

Defining imposter syndrome:

Impostor syndrome, also known as impostor phenomenon, impostorism, or impostor thoughts, is a psychological experience in which a person suffers from feelings of intellectual and/or professional fraudulence. — MoTaverse Glossary

It's easy to fall into the trap, especially in a tech career, that we are not good enough. That all those around us are better. In the MoTaverse, we want to squish that thinking away. We don't have a course on it, rather, our philosophy is about taking action, as we feel this is the most actionable way to make progress.

A few, but not all ways we help people squish their imposter syndrome away:
  • a philosophy of always be inviting: no experience, no problem, we believe you still have something valuable to contribute
  • 99 second talks: these have been happening for years and are designed to help you believe in yourself, in a less intimidating way
  • share a moment: it feels scary at first to publish anything online, moments are there to be shared and help you believe in yourself
  • lead a chapter: not everyone wants to speak, leaders are not always public speakers, becoming an organiser is a great and alternative way to build your confidence and your network
  • MoTography: photos to help you look professionally good!
  • Your MoT profile: the MoTaverse is designed to track all your contributions, from submitting a glossary entry, to attending an event, all the way up to speaking on stage. There is something for everyone, and it's all tracked to help you, your network and boss see how you are contributing.

The MoTaverse is designed to squish away your imposter syndrome. This is not by accident. It is designed into the MoTaverse as a Service, this is Community as a Service in action. Our people, processes and platform are built to support this.

Video disclaimer: the video is AI generated, is created with a serious message, yet we like to keep things lighthearted.

I feel in the past I have hit this especially when it comes to speaking in public. Sure I did a 99 second talk in 2016 but unfortunately I never really took it forward from there, until I came back to the MoTaverse in 2024. I think for me This Week in Quality was the catalyst that helped me slowly push myself to share more of my experience via voice and video. The first attempt was hard but after doing it a second, third and fourth time I gradually built my confidence up. Following on from that Simon involved me one of his early tests of the new Call for Insights. These were only short video moments but then that eventually led to doing my first full Call for Insights a few months back. The fact the MoTaverse is welcoming of all voices is the key - everyone's thoughts and ideas matter and promoting that alongside the opinions and ideas of those more prominent in the industry is really important.

I often feel like I'm just doing 'something', what comes to mind, improvising. This makes me very insecure as I don't feel like I know what I'm doing. However all these instinctual things I did, are all actual things. MoT has helped me find the word for it and to improve on it. If there wasn't a word for it, the community would find out e for it, thus making it feel more official. Also when I tried to achieve something g the experiences of other people in the community helped me realise I'm not alone. Often people shared advice on how to deal with it or how to find the problem. All in all MoT helped me find the toolset I needed (or maybe is the toolset 🤔) to find the confidence, agency and vocabulary I needed to remedy imposter syndrome.
