The MoTaverse: a bit of this and a bit of that

Expanding our space, one byte at a time

These days I'm exploring how we describe who we are at Ministry of Testing and what we are trying to achieve for you.

We've been around in our earliest life form since 2007. Hosted our first conference in 2012. Started building a membership platform around 2015. Started publishing articles and running MoT Meetups across the globe around 2016. Hosted OnDemand courses around 2017. Hosted online conferences around 2020. Launched our first certifications in 2024 and a second one in 2025. Started Testing Trends in 2024. Started MoT memories and memes in 2024. Started a glossary in 2025…

As someone who has been in deep research mode around businesses and communities, I refer to this as a community of practice. However, even that doesn't really reflect what we are doing and trying to do.

We're trying to be brave. We're stepping up when the world feels crazy. We aspire to expand the software testing universe in ways that haven't been done, anywhere. The MoTaverse should be where software testing and quality engineering professionals can dip in and dip out at any point of their lives to not only learn, but to be inspired and to connect with those around them.

We believe the world will be a better place with the MoTaverse, not only to us as professionals, but also to the quality of software across the globe. How exciting is this to think about?

We also believe we are building another model for other professions to follow. A beautiful space, of learning, career advancement and opportunities. A place where we are better together. A place where we can make better sense of all the knowledge out there. I believe we can be a positive example to the world. We can show other professions how to gather and expand knowledge.

We are a place that considers diversity. Not only of people, but that of how we learn. We all learn differently. Some through courses. Some through conversations. Some through presenting and sharing their ideas. Some through attending meetups or conferences. Some love video, others prefer audio, some are visual people, others love text, and some simply love absorbing what is around them.

From this perspective, we can't just be one thing; we are many things, but with a very clear purpose of creating the most supportive space out there for people like us.

We're a bit like:

  • YouTube and Netflix — have you watched any of our videos recently?
  • LinkedIn — contributions you make will make your profile and profession shine bright
  • Instagram — come share memories of your community experience
  • Ted Conferences — a real platform to bring new ideas to the world
  • Wired, Vanity Fair or The Verge — we dive into and share trends and stories
  • BBC, The New York Times, CNN — we bring you the latest news
  • Urban Dictionary — community lexicon matters, maybe more than you think
  • Pocket, Raindrop, Delicious or Pinboard — a place to store your knowledge (coming very soon!)
  • Bluesky, but definitely not like X — we're a place to share your daily thoughts (coming one day!)
  • A university — education, carefully curated and created with leading experts
  • The metaverse — but we are the MoTaverse, with way better ethics.

The MoTaverse is here for you, to help you and your team grow. To create community-driven research, expand our collective knowledge, inspire new ideas and to connect people. To help you make better decisions about how to ship better software.

If you like the sound of this, we'd really like to encourage you to sign up as a Professional Member, get certified, attend a TestBash or explore becoming an MoT Partner.

We're punching above our weight as a small and independently run company. We strive for ethics, sustainability and invest everything back into the community and the ecosystem.

Thanks for taking the time to read, it's appreciated!
